Industrial Boiler MACT
EPA finalized the industrial boiler MACT on September 13, 2004 to control emissions of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), such as mercury, from these sources. The rule was set to take effect in September 2007 but has been delayed due to litigation. The rule impacts approximately 58,000 existing boilers, such as industrial boilers, institutional and commercial boilers, and process heaters. Regulation of these boilers is determined by the fuel burned - solid, liquid, or gaseous - and by the size of the boiler, with large boilers having heat input >10mmBtu/hr. Fossil fuel-fired EGUs are exempt from this regulation since they are regulated by other policies. One option of attaining the MACT requirements is by using a compliant fuel. Emissions limits are outlined below:
