Fact Sheet
Notre Dame Test Burn

February 7, 2007

Description: Comprehensive test burn at University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana to test performance of high-sulfur Ohio low-fusion bituminous coal when blended with K-Fuel® at 50 percent and 75 percent as well as to test burn 100 percent K-Fuel®. The fuel was provided to the University of Notre Dame by Buckeye Industrial Mining Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of Evergreen Energy Inc. and the University's current coal supplier.

Objective: Combine the coals in prescribed percentages to assess, through stack testing verification and fuel sampling analysis, compliance with the Federal Industrial Boiler Maximum Achievable Control Technology Rule, which takes effect September 13, 2007.

Methodology: The test burn was designed to take advantage of K-Fuel's® ultra low levels of mercury, chloride and sulfur while maintaining the boiler at or near full load.

Results: Third party emission measurements and fuel sampling analysis verified that when compared to the base bituminous coal normally used, a 100 percent burn of K-Fuel® reduced chloride emissions by 75 percent and sulfur dioxide emissions by 90 percent. The difference in mercury content of K-Fuel® as compared to the feedstock coal was 75 percent lower.

Many cyclone-fired boilers operating under light load conditions experience problems with the operation of their slag taps, which are orifices at the bottom of the boiler that are opened to drain away molten ash. The lower ash melting temperatures of K-Fuel® and its fluxing (flow) effect on the Eastern bituminous coal improved the operation of the slag taps. The taps ran freely even when the boiler was turned down for load considerations during off-peak periods. The increased calcium content in the K-Fuel® ash substituted for the iron content of bituminous coal ash and resolved the chronic slag flow problems.

Test Dates: December 13-15, 2006

Boiler: Babcock and Wilcox Cyclone Fired boiler #4 located at University of Notre Dame's power plant, which provides steam heat, electricity and chilled water to the campus.
