KFx COAL BENEFICATION
The world needs all coal technologies - beneficiation, gasification, and liquefaction. Each has advantages and disadvantages.
KFx's believes in the "here and now" market for clean, solid fuel for existing and future coal-fired power and steam generation in the U.S. and worldwide.
As U.S. gas demand and prices increase, gasification is an obvious next-generation technology. There is no doubt that gasification will play an important future role.
But, the U.S. has an immediate need for higher Btu, cleaner burning coal to use in its existing power generating units. K-FuelTM is one of the least capital intensive and cost effective commercial "clean coal" technologies available in the U.S. that requires no changes by customers.
With the high prices for compliance coal, KFx is "here and now" ready to transform inexpensive, abundant low-grade coal reserves into higher-value "clean coal" that is in demand worldwide.
KFx believes it is more profitable on a risk adjusted basis in today's market to beneficiate low-grade coal than gasifying and producing synthesis gas from that same coal.
WHY BENEFICIATION?
- It is easier and more economical to remove pollutants from coal pre-combustion than post-combustion.
- Beneficiation optimizes the use of abundant, inexpensive, low-grade coal reserves, which are inefficient and often expensive to clean-up as-is. In addition, low-grade coals are usually less suitable for gasification/liquefaction.
Potential Existing Market Demand for Beneficiated Coal:
- The U.S. consumes 1.1 billion tons of coal annually; 5.2 billion tons of coal is consumed annually worldwide.
- 51% of all electricity in the U.S. is generated using coal as the heat source.
- 1,300 coal boilers cannot use gas or oil as a primary fuel without large capital investment.
- The infrastructure and rail transportation is in place for coal.
- Approximately two-thirds of U.S. coal-fired power capacity has neither scrubbers (to reduce SO2 emissions) nor selective catalytic reduction (SCRs) equipment to reduce NOX emissions.
- Beneficiated coal (i.e. K-FuelTM) allows coal-fired power plants an alternative to continue operations by either reducing or eliminating the need for costly (capital and operating) post combustion emissions controls and the loss of generation capacity.
- Beneficiated coal can also enhance the effectiveness of post combustion emissions controls.
